This year’s Summer Interns

This summer, we’re joined by four talented interns across our Control Systems and Operations departments: Herman Gran, Rune Espenakk, Anders Sandvik and Victoria Omholt.
Bringing theory to life
Herman, who studies Automation and Intelligent Systems at NTNU Ålesund, joined us to explore how theory translates into practice.
“I wanted an internship at Seaonics because the company develops exciting projects that I wanted a better understanding of,” he says.
His tasks have included setting up a videowall, testing AI-based object detection, and developing tools to improve system monitoring.
“You’re given real tasks with real purpose,” Herman says. “I’ve learned methods and concepts I hadn’t worked with before.”

Hands-on experience
Rune and Anders have worked together on a project focused on eliminating mechanical backlash – a challenge critical to precision in offshore lifting. Using a custom-built test rig, they’ve explored solutions combining hardware, programming, and control theory.
“So far, the internship has exceeded my expectations – it’s been both fun and educational,” Rune says.
“You get to see how everything from motors to code works together in practice, which is also highly relevant to my studies,” adds Anders, who studies Cybernetics and Robotics.

Victoria, pursuing a master’s in Global Manufacturing Management, has focused her internship on supplier management. She’s developed a risk tool tied to the Transparency Act and contributed to structuring a new ISO-based evaluation process.
“It’s motivating to work on something that actually contributes to how the company operates,” she says.
Looking for tomorrow’s specialists
“For us, internships are an opportunity to involve students in real-world challenges early on,” says Emil Bjørlykhaug, Control System Manager. “They bring curiosity, commitment, and often look at things from fresh angles. We want to be a place where future specialists feel they can grow.”
- Would you recommend other students to do an internship in SEAONICS?
“I would absolutely recommend an internship here,” Victoria says. “The work is meaningful, the tasks are relevant, and the atmosphere is open and inclusive. And last but not least –Friday waffles don’t hurt either!”
